St. Ives Golf Club:
“Every time we stand on the first tee we feel excited.” That’s the verdict of the members of St Ives (Hunts) golf club who agree it’s the “WOW!”- factor that makes this new inland links course such an attractive prospect for all golf enthusiasts.
The 230-acre site off the Needingworth Road was purchased in 2007 and in three years was transformed into a stunning undulating 18-hole course with the dramatic panoramic views and wide horizons for which East Anglia is famous.
The course is never dull or boring. No two holes are similar: each one represents a very different test for the golfer as they step up to the tee. With a choice of four tees for every hole, wide rolling fairways and large, sculptured, well bunkered greens, golfers will be excited by the challenges in all areas of their game. All this in an environment of space, natural water features and amazing wildlife; 66 different species of birds have been spotted on the course.
Designed by Cameron Sinclair, the course was officially opened in August 2010 by the Swedish professional Robert Karlsson, who praised the ‘excellent’ quality of the greens and stated that in his opinion the course will mature to become ‘of the highest quality’ and in its article just after the course opened in 2010 Pitchmark magazine said 'it's hard to imagine it not becoming the County's premier venue.'
The club was founded in 1923 as a 9-hole course then on the outskirts of the town and has an enviable reputation for its relaxed and friendly atmosphere. That course was much beloved by its members, but realising the need to look to the future they agreed, in July 2006, to move to an 18 hole facility. On 2 April 2007 the first sod was cut.
